The Effect of Weak Gravitational Lensing on the Angular Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده

If Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are cosmologically distributed standard candles and are associated with the luminous galaxies, then the observed angular distribution of all GRBs is altered due to weak gravitational lensing of bursts by density inhomogeneities. The amplitude of the effect is generally small. For example, if the current catalogs extend to zmax ∼ 1 and we live in a flat Ω = 1 Universe, the angular auto-correlation function of GRBs will be enhanced by ∼ 8% due to lensing, on all angular scales. For an extreme case of zmax = 1.5 and (Ω, Λ)=(0.2, 0.8), an enhancement of ∼ 33% is predicted. If the observed distribution of GRBs is used in the future to derive power spectra of mass density fluctuations on large angular scales, the effect of weak lensing should probably be taken into account. Gravitationally Lensed Gamma-Ray Bursts as Probes of Dark Compact Objects

If dark matter in the form of compact objects comprises a large fraction of the mass of the universe, then gravitational lensing effects on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are expected. We utilize BATSE and Ulysses data to search for lenses of different mass ranges, which cause lensing in the milli, pico, and femto regimes. Null results are used to set weak limits on the cosmological abundance of compa...

Small-Angle Scattering of X-Rays from Extragalactic Sources by Dust in Intervening Galaxies

Gamma-ray bursts are now known to be a cosmological population of objects, which are often accompanied by X-ray and optical afterglows. The total energy emitted in the afterglow can be similar to the energy radiated in the gamma-ray burst itself. If a galaxy containing a large column density of dust is near the line of sight to a gamma-ray burst, small-angle scattering of the X-rays due to diff...

Statistics of Weak Lensing at Small Angular Scales: Analytical Predictions for Lower Order Moments

Weak lensing surveys are expected to provide direct measurements of the statistics of the projected dark matter distribution. Most analytical studies of weak lensing statistics have been limited to quasilinear scales as they relied on perturbative calculations. On the other hand, observational surveys are likely to probe angular scales less than 10 arcminutes, for which the relevant physical le...

Gravitational Lensing Limits on the Average Redshift of Gamma-ray Bursts

The lack of bright host galaxies in several recently examined gamma-ray burst (GRB) error boxes suggests that the redshifts of cosmological GRBs may be signiÐcantly higher than previously hypothesized. On the other hand, the nondetection of multiple images in the Fourth BATSE Gamma-Ray Burst Catalog (hereafter 4B catalog) implies an upper limit to the average redshift SzT of GRBs. Here we calcu...
